It’s officially summertime in Southwest Florida, which makes it a perfect time to review our recommended A/C Checklist!
As always, if you find an issue with your home’s Air Conditioning that you are not sure how to fix, never hesitate to call the Southwest Florida A/C experts for over 50 years – Avis Plumbing & Air Conditioning!
#1) Clean Your Condenser Unit
Many air conditioning systems utilize an outdoor component known as a condenser unit. Being outdoors, various debris can accumulate around the unit. Remove any leaves or branches that may have become lodged in the condenser’s cage. Any weeds or tall grass should be removed from the area surrounding the units as well. A soft bristled brush can be used to clear away any dust or dirt that may have settled in the grate of the unit.
Keep in mind that you should never reach inside of your condenser unit. If a branch or any other debris becomes lodged within the unit, you should call a professional A/C technician to remove the item. You should also contact your A/C technician if you find that a fin or any other component of your unit is damaged or not properly functioning.
#2) Replace Your Air Filter
Regularly replacing your air filter is one of the most important tips to keeping your HVAC system running as efficiently as possible. Mentioned frequently in our air conditioning blogs, air filters prevent harmful allergens, dust, and debris from being released into the air you breathe within your home.
Filters should be checked on a monthly basis and changed every one to three months. If left unchanged, filters can become clogged and restrict the amount of airflow in your home. This can lead to system malfunctions and higher operating costs. Maintaining a clean air filter will not only provide better air quality in your home, but it will also extend the life of your home’s air conditioning system.
#3) Install a Programmable Thermostat
Summer temperatures in Southwest Florida are known to rise well into the 100 degree range, which can cause your energy bills to spike. Reduce your energy costs by purchasing and installing a programmable thermostat.
A programmable thermostat allows for you to set different temperatures in your home based upon the time of day. For example, you can raise your home’s temperature while the house is vacant during the workday but then set it to cool your home once you return. Because no one is home during those hours, you have no need to keep your home significantly cooler than outdoors. As a result, you would save on your monthly utility bill by reducing the amount of energy needed to keep your home cool while you’re away.
#4) Receive Yearly Maintenance
You should always plan to have your unit serviced by a certified HVAC technician twice a year. The Southwest Florida summer heat makes air conditioning a daily necessity for homes across Lee and Collier Counties. Prevent an emergency situation by always scheduling regular maintenance for your units so that small problems can be identified and addressed before they cause your system to fail completely.
Spring and Fall are usually good times to schedule your yearly maintenance, but it should always be checked at least before the summertime heat kicks in. Service maintenance plans, such as the Residential Energy Savings Agreement offered by Avis Plumbing & Air Conditioning, are a great way to keep costs low and maintain regular service of your air conditioning system.
