Leaky sinks are an extremely common problem in homes not only in Cape Coral and Fort Myers, but across the country. Most of the time, the problem goes ignored for days, weeks — even years. After all, the sound of dripping water is annoying, but hardly that big of an issue, right? Actually, a leaky sink can cause thousands of dollars in damage and wasted water if it isn’t fixed. Let’s examine the two main reasons why it’s best to call Avis Plumbing & Air Conditioning if you have a leaking sink.

Water Wasting

Let’s say you have a leaky faucet in your home that drips once per minute. That’s pretty slow as far as leaks go. Well, that single faucet will drip over 1400 times per day. If you factor it out to an entire year, that’s over 30 gallons wasted. What if it drips four times per minute? Again, that’s a pretty conservative estimate for a lot of leaks. That adds up to over 130 gallons of water wasted every year. It adds up, and ends up costing you money.

Water Damage

If the leak is from your faucet, chances are you don’t have to worry about water damage. Your sink is designed to handle water, after all. Where this really becomes a problem is if you have a leak in the pipes under the sink. The most common result of a leak under the sink is the growth of mold. The dark, damp environment under most sinks is the ideal place in which mold can grow. Oftentimes, mold like this can pose health risks to those living in the house.

The other thing to watch out for is water rotting out areas under the sink. This can lead to structural damage, which can necessitate replacing the entire cabinet structure — not a cheap undertaking. That’s an awful lot of time and expense for something as simple as a leaking pipe! These kinds of leaks are more dangerous because they often take place completely out of sight. Be sure to check under your sink every so often to make sure that everything is dry, and no pipes are leaking

I think it’s crazy how much water can be wasted from just a simple leaky faucet. It makes me worry about how much I’m wasting because my sink drips more than once a minute. I’ve always thought it wasn’t that big of a deal but I have been proven wrong.
